A Mental Health Check

As reported by the nonprofit organization Mental Health America (MHA), the number of people in the U.S. living with anxiety or depression rose steeply in the first months of the coronavirus pandemic, the period covered by the screening. And as of last spring, up to 65 percent of adults surveyed by the American Psychiatric Association were experiencing some degree of anxiety related to Covid-19.

To assess your own mental health status, you can take an online screening test from MHA here. Screening tests are available for depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder, among other mental health conditions, and are free, anonymous, and confidential. There is also a mental health test for children and teens. Along with the results, you will receive resources to help guide you to better mental health, including where to find support and treatment in your area.

Mental Health America’s website also provides curated articles on mental health and DIY tools (including apps that teach psychological skills). It’s important to note, however, that quick mental health assessment tools and online resources are not for diagnosing mental health conditions, and they are not a replacement for consultation with a mental health professional.
